This is the third in a series of cartoon animations using a Star Trek theme with dialogues between Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. Each dialogue teaches about an aspect of e-discovery law practice. This episode addresses one of the four pillars of effective electronic discovery law practice – Education. It considers a situation where a large firm or corporate law department needs to be trained in e-discovery to avoid obsolescence. This kind of large scale training program is one of my specialties. The cartoon shares one of the key techniques I have developed for this kind of education program. It also examines a few common problems of e-discovery training.
This episode begins with Kirk receiving orders to train an whole planet of lawyers in e-discovery. As usual, Spock objects to the orders as irrational and explains why it cannot be done. Captain Kirk forges ahead anyway and finds a solution. Spock is impressed, but not with Kirk’s celebratory dance. It is a tough mission for the Enterprise, but the advanced e-discovery trained crew is up for it. They use the proven programs and latest techniques of Starfleet Academy to train older lawyers in e-discovery, in much the same way that I use law school proven programs and techniques in my online training program. Tradition, hard work, innovation, and creativity are the keys to learning, in school and out.
